She put the phone back in its cradle and stared at it, unseeing. Because of the photograph in the attic bedroom, Maddie had a distinct image of Arthur Tyler—even if it was a half century old. She felt she knew him through the delightful notes he left for her, but it was strange to now have a voice to put to those notes. He had almost become like one of her characters—an intangible, yet beloved presence in her life. But hearing his throaty voice had made him seem all too real, and suddenly she felt very odd about going out to the inn, knowing he would be downstairs in his apartment.

The clatter of a slamming toolbox lid brought her to her senses. Mr. Tyler was expecting her, and she didn’t want to call him back and risk disturbing him. Climbing over the flooring materials that littered the kitchen, she grabbed her things and made her escape.

On a whim, she stopped by the Main Street Deli and picked up two take-out tubs of chicken noodle soup. She’d heat up one for lunch and leave the other in the refrigerator for Mr. Tyler. That ought to be good for what ailed him, and it was another small way she could show her appreciation.
